Commission leader condemns Whitmer s rejection of revised Detroit charter plan
The Detroit Charter Revision Commission on Saturday issued a statement condemning Gov. Whitmer s rejection of the revised charter plan submitted to her.
In a press statement released Saturday, Weaver said the commission received the governor s letter and analysis done by the Attorney General s Office and in a quick review of some of the comments, it appears that many of the concerns raised address minor clarifications in the language and non-legal issues.
Weaver said one of Whitmer s main objections is the cost of the proposals in the charter but that objection is based on inherently unreliable and inaccurate information put forth by Mayor Michael Duggan, who refuses to provide information to the Commission, public, and even the Financial Review Board on how they arrived at their incorrect figures. .

Worst-case scenario budget proposes 2.44 percent tax increase
SMITHFIELD – The newly formed Smithfield Budget and Financial Review Board will hold its first public hearing on April 14 at 5:30 p.m., giving Smithfield residents a look at the 2021-2022 town budget.
As proposed, the fiscal year 2021-2022 budget will total $85,764,818, including enterprise items such as water, sewer and the ice rink that are self-funded. That figure also includes the schools’ budget of $40,579,679.
Town Manager Randy Rossi told The Valley Breeze & Observer he worked with all town departments to create a solid budget that straight-funded the School Department’s requested town appropriation, resulting in a possible 2.44 percent increase in the tax levy.
SMITHFIELD – In its second meeting on Dec. 9, Smithfield’s newly elected Town Council sat down for a group discussion on objectives and goals, many centered on limiting taxes, enhancing public safety, and investing in resources.
Council President Suzy Alba asked all members to take a few moments to discuss key issues and concerns facing the town, as well as what councilors hope to accomplish over the next two-year term.
Returning for his second term, Councilor Sean Kilduff said his main focus for the next two years is Smithfield’s bond indebtedness and doing whatever possible to offset the impact to taxpayers.
