The province is introducing changes to the Employment Standards Code that would allow Manitoba workers to take a three-hour paid leave to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.
“We are at a critical point in our fight against COVID-19 and we want to encourage all Manitobans to get their COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible,” said Finance Minister Scott Fielding. “Our government is removing barriers so Manitobans can confidently book a COVID-19 vaccination during work hours without fear of losing out on their regular wages.” ....

“I think if you asked the vast majority of Manitobans … I don’t think they would say they are rich,” said Finance Minister Scott Fielding. “That dog don’t hunt, it doesn’t wash. Someone who is paying on average, in Manitoba to the education property tax about $1,700, so paying a $3,200 tax bill when you take into consideration municipal taxes. I wouldn’t categorize that as someone who’s rich, it’s just providing a much needed break for everyone.”

I can also say, as a renter for the last 21 years in three different provinces, I welcome the news of a rent freeze for 2022 and 2023. Yes, our own rebate on the education tax is being phased out as well, but Manitoba is the only province in Canada that has a rebate to renters based off the education tax. For the third year in a row, the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba (WCB) is distributing surplus funds to employers, whose premiums fund the workers compensation system.
By continuing to invest in injury prevention and return to work programs, the WCB is pleased to once again provide financial relief to employers after a challenging year for all Manitobans, the organization said in a press release.
“COVID-19 has had a significant impact on businesses across the province and we want to do our part to provide some measure of relief to employers,” said Richard Deacon, president and CEO of WCB. ....
