Rail and electric vehicles are getting the lions share of the investment from today s Budget towards the Government s efforts to bring down emissions.
KiwiRail is getting $1.3 billion over four years to go towards replacing locomotives, infrastructure maintenance and new facilities.
$300 million is going into a green investment fund to be put towards low-carbon technology, electric vehicles, and greening public transport.
It was established in 2019 with $100m of Government money - so it now has $400m to play with.
$300m has been set aside for a revived feebate scheme to subsidise electric vehicles which was torpedoed by New Zealand First in the Government s last term. ....

Finance Minister Grant Robertson explains some of the details from Budget 2021.
The Government’s $380 million Budget investment in Māori housing has been heralded as a step in the right direction, rather than unleashing transformational change.
Porirua iwi Ngāti Toa Rangatira has around 120 families in its social housing queue, despite only establishing its list this year. While conceding the new investment was a good starting point, Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangitira chief executive Helmut Modlik said it needed to be used strategically to yield the greatest benefit.
“If they use that capital to [help] the Māori community in leveraging it to its best effect, then I think it would have a multiplier effect that would do a lot, lot more than [create] 1000 homes,” Modlik said. ....
