How L.A. cake virtuosos learned to thrive on Instagram

The 6-inch cake that pastry chef Casey Shea delivered was a barrel-shaped whirl of salted vanilla buttercream, sequined with sliced berries and candied kumquats.
On an early March menu, Shea had presented her customers, who ordered via Instagram, with four cake options: coconut chocolate, banana hazelnut, blood orange with lemon whip and blackberry and a surprise chef’s choice based on what she found at the farmers markets.
A good kind of surprise could be uplifting right now, I thought. Springtime was in view. Maybe there’d be some ripe red fruit layered underneath the frosting?

Lisa Vanderpump Restaurants Sued For $100,000 Over Unpaid Produce Bill

Los Angeles produce supplier West Central Produce has filed suit against Pump Restaurant and the shuttered Villa Blanca for non-payment of delivered goods this month. Both restaurants are owned by reality television star Lisa Vanderpump and her husband Ken Todd, and have featured prominently in their reality shows.
West Central Produce alleges that it is back-owed approximately $100,000 plus interest from both Pump and Villa Blanca produce orders that were delivered, but never paid for. The distributor claims that it last received payment in March 2020 from both restaurants, where Villa Blanca paid $8,890.10, and $9,144.70 for Pump, reports TMZ, leaving an outstanding bill to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars. ....

If you’ve ventured outside your home recently, you’ve probably noticed it looks like pre-pandemic times. Traffic clogging the freeways, Angelenos out and about shopping and people dining outdoors. Ever since Southern California saw some restrictions lifted, it’s felt just a bit like getting back to normal. That has some public health officials worried but what about businesses? 
There are all sorts of metrics to figure out how businesses are doing.  We looked at one pies.  Nicole Rucker is a chef who runs a pie shop at Grand Central Market called  Fat + Flour. She told us that this activity has economic teeth to it. ....
