Luxembourg’s Olympic team has so far not produced any surprises at the Tokyo games. But the grand duchy’s female basketball team did pick up a gold medal at the European small nations tournament.
Athletes from the grand duchy have been competing in several disciplines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games over the weekend.
In the women’s cycling road race, Christine Majerus placed 20th, with Austria’s Anna Kiesenhofer providing one of the surprises of the Games so far by claiming the gold medal. Majerus told RTL that she had managed her own race fairly well, until she made a mistake and failed to take a drinks bottle on the final circuit, which led to her suffering from minor cramping. “It was a shame I couldn’t improve my result from the last Games [she placed 18th in Rio 2016]. Ils devraient être une dizaine d’athlètes luxembourgeois à se rendre fin juillet à Tokyo pour disputer les 32e olympiades de l’ère moderne (du 23 juillet au 8 août). Avant d’en arriver là, certains ont connu des trajectoires étonnantes. On vous les raconte.
1. Bob Bertemes, Lanceur de poids
Bob Bertemes est sans doute la meilleure chance de voir cet été un Luxembourgeois monter sur un podium olympique. Chose qui ne s’est plus vue depuis 1952 dans une olympiade estivale et le titre d’un certain Josy Barthel à Helsinki. Pour en revenir à Bertemes (28 ans), ce grand gaillard de près d’1m90 devait avoir une dizaine d’années lorsqu’il effectua ses premiers pas sur une piste d’athlétisme, aux côtés de Sonia Ilieva, une ancienne lanceuse de javelot qui fut pendant plus de dix ....
