Nature Communications, the latest study raises questions about previous studies that found remdesivir had no impact on death rates from the disease. The study describes how a patient with COVID-19 and X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA), a rare, inherited immunodeficiency disorder, showed significant improvement when treated with remdesivir. Prior to being treated, the patient showed moderate but persistent symptoms of COVID-19 due to his inability to produce antibodies. Antibodies play a key role in defending against pathogens. Though unusual, the presence of both COVID-19 and XLA in the patient gave the researchers rare insight into remdesivir’s antiviral properties and its effectiveness in the treatment of COVID-19. ....

The drug remdesivir, long touted as a potential Covid-19 treatment, has been used to successfully cure a patient who suffered a rare reaction to the disease. A 31-year-old man infected with the coronavirus experienced unusual symptoms due to a genetic disorder called XLA, which prevented him from making antibodies to fight infection. The patient was twice admitted to hospital with confirmed Covid-19, with moderate but persistent symptoms. His condition was stable but did not improve on its own. On both occasions, treatment with remdesivir rapidly led to improvement in his condition and allowed him to be discharged. The researchers say the patient s inability to make antibodies offered a unique insight into the functioning of the drug in Covid-19 patients. ....
