Enduring wars hamper Bangsamoro’s conflict-to-peace transition
An explosion of clan feuding and land related conflict in 2019 threatens to stall the momentum towards peace in the Bangsamoro region. This is according to Conflict Alert, a subnational conflict monitoring system focused on Mindanao in the Philippines, which launched its 2020 Bangsamoro conflict report.
By close of 2019, the conflict monitoring system logged a total of 2,655 violent conflict incidents in the five Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, including the cities of Cotabato and Isabela – a decrease of 9% from the previous year.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 26) – Clan feuds, violent extremism, illegal drugs and weapons are the three main roadblocks to Bangsamoro’s transition into a peaceful region, a group monitoring subnational conflicts in the country said on Monday.
In its 2020 Bangsamoro Conflict Report, International Alert Philippines said a total of 2,655 violent conflict incidents occurred in Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi in 2019. These five provinces comprise the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

DAVAO CITY – The latest comprehensive report of Conflict Alert showed that an increasing number of clan feuding and land related conflicts in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is threatening the region’s momentum to achieving peace.

Conflict Alert is a subnational conflict monitoring system focused on Mindanao and developed by the Philippines Programme of the independent peace building organization International Alert.
According to the report released on Monday (Jan. 25), “the highest concentrations of clan feuds were in Lanao del Sur (64, up by 64 percent) and in Maguindanao, including Cotabato City (56, up by 22 percent).”
