(AP) A bill that strengthens penalties for drivers endangering first responders and highway workers on Montana roadways has been signed into law. Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the measure Thursday increasing fines for driving reckless around emergency personnel to a maximum of $500 for a first offense and $1000 for a second offense. The bill from Fairfield Republican Rep. Ross Fitzgerald also included tow truck drivers among those people who drivers can be punished for endangering. It was co-sponsored by Bozeman Democratic Rep. Jim Hamilton. Support for the legislation was driven in part by testimony from family of Casie Allen and Nick Visser, tow truck operators who were hit and killed by a truck while clearing a crash on I-90 between Park City and Columbus on an icy morning in October, the Billings Gazette reported. ....
A bill aimed at strengthening Montana s move-over laws to better protect first responders passed a key hurdle in the Montana Legislature when it was sent from the House to the Senate earlier this week. House Bill 264 would add a penalty for reckless endangerment of emergency personnel to laws on passing emergency vehicles. It would also add tow truck vehicles to the list of first responders drivers are required to move over for. On Monday the bill passed its third reading with 99 yes votes and no votes against. The bill has support from a range of first responder groups, including the Montana Fire Chiefs Association, the Montana Tow Truck Association and the Montana State Volunteer Firefighters Association. ....
Montana Legislature considers pair of bills to update road safety laws and last updated 2021-02-04 17:24:43-05 HELENA â After several tragic crashes, advocates are urging Montana lawmakers to make changes to the stateâs road safety laws. The House Transportation Committee held hearings Wednesday afternoon on House Bills 264 and 267. Supporters of both bills see them as responses to serious crashes over the last two years. HB 264, sponsored by Republican Rep. Ross Fitzgerald of Fairfield, would revise the stateâs laws on passing emergency vehicles. Currently, drivers have to slow down and move over when passing firefighters, police or ambulances on the road. The bill would add tow trucks to the law, and require drivers to slow down to half the posted speed limit â or to a temporary posted speed if there is one â when passing. It would also create a charge of âreckless endangerment of emergency personnelâ for those who violated ....
