It hasn’t all been plain sailing for the new look Manchester City side this season, but the WSL giants have found their form under the new manager in recent months, as Rich Laverty explores in his latest column. Manchester City’s win against Everton on Sunday was by no means a thriller in terms of goalmouth action. However, it does come in handy when trying to analyse the progress and depth in approach under new head coach Gareth Taylor. The Welshman had big shoes to fill following the departure of Nick Cushing to New York City FC and after a patchy start, the Man City side have made a roaring comeback. They’re looking more and more like the powerhouse they once were under Taylor’s predecessor. ....
Despite the lack of her presence at this year’s Euros, the superb Caroline Weir has now earned the right to be one of the first names on the Team GB squad list should Tokyo go ahead. Scotland, and indeed Wales’, failure to qualify for Euro 2022 shouldn’t dent the chances that some of those players have of making the Team GB Olympic squad this summer, with one player now one of the standout candidates for a ticket on the plane to Tokyo. Sheehan is looking for the weather to play a helping hand as he prepares his youthful side for a clash with a City squad packed with international talent, so much so that nine Lionesses featured for the Sky Blues as they defeated bottom club Bristol City 1-0 on Wednesday in a league fixture. ....
The Sky Blues boss has overcome a slow start to top-flight management by building a winning team capable of WSL glory, writes Jessy Parker Humphreys. Gareth Taylor may have played down its title race significance but there’s never been a Manchester derby in the women’s game that has meant as much as this. DERBY DAY!! ⚔️ After years of Manchester City being at the top of the Women’s Super League, this year they have had to contend with a very real threat in the form of Manchester United. A win would take City a point above their rivals in second place and leave them just two points behind Chelsea on 35 points with a home game against the league leaders still to play. ....
