The state is home to some of the largest military installations in the country, more than 120,000 active duty and reserve members of the armed forces, and 1.5 million veterans. There are laws that help veterans buy homes, run small businesses, receive college credit, and send their kids to college. But in one vital area, Texas is leaving our veterans behind: it is one of just 14 states where veterans don’t have access to medical cannabis, which has proven effective in helping manage the physical and mental wounds that often stem from their service to our nation. ....

Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, would expand the state’s medical cannabis program to include those with chronic pain, all cancer patients and Texans with post-traumatic stress disorder. It would also authorize the Department of State Health Services to add additional qualifying conditions through administrative rulemaking. Current law requires the Legislature to pass a bill to expand eligibility. ....
