After Contentious Debate, UNC Grants Tenure To Nikole Hannah-Jones

Trustees for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill voted Wednesday afternoon at a closed session to give tenure to star New York Times writer Nikole Hannah-Jones several months after refusing to consider her proposed tenure.
The case inspired a bruising debate over race, journalism and academic freedom. It led both to national headlines and anger and distress among many Black faculty members and students at UNC. Some professors there have publicly said they were reconsidering their willingness to remain at the university over the journalist s treatment. ....

UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees grant tenure to Nikole Hannah-Jones


The UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees approved tenure for acclaimed journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones on Wednesday, ending a month-long saga that has outraged students, faculty and journalists across the country.
In a public vote, the board approved Hannah-Jones’s tenure application 9-4 after a closed session of nearly three hours.
Voting “no” were members Haywood Cochrane, Allie Rae McCullen, John Preyer and David Boliek.
Hannah-Jones issued a written statement shortly after the vote, leaving it unclear if she would accept the position.
“I want to acknowledge the tremendous outpouring of support I have received from students, faculty, colleagues, and the general public over the last month – including the young people who showed up today at the Board of Trustees meeting, putting themselves at physical risk,” Hannah-Jones wrote. “I am honored and grateful for and inspired by you all. I know that this vote would not have occurred without you.” ....

Artists, Athletes, Educators Voice Support for Nikole Hannah-Jones Amid Issue of Tenure at UNC
Hundreds of artists, athletes and educators signed onto an open letter Tuesday morning, voicing solidarity with award-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones following the news that UNC elected to postpone its review of her tenure application.
Hannah-Jones, who works for the New York Times, is set to return to her alma mater as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism, a professorship that typically includes tenure. The UNC Board of Trustees, however, elected to “take no action” on her tenure application, which has led to increasing community outrage. The discourse continued Tuesday, with 238 people writing support for Hannah-Jones in an opinion column for the Black-oriented magazine The Root. ....
