Runners raise vital funds for hospices with 4x4x48 challenge

Springhill Hospice
A group of five runners have raised over £5,000 for two local hospices with a 4x4x48 challenge.
Matthew Hernon, Ryan Miskella, Al Chew, Lewis Eadsforth and Sam Wright ran 48km in 48 hours, running 4km every four hours between Saturday 27 March and Sunday 28 March.
The 4x4x48 challenge was born by retired Navy Seal and ultrarunner David Goggins – running four miles every four hours in 48 hours (4x4x48).
At the time of publication, the five have now raised £5,766 to be shared by Rochdale’s Springhill Hospice and Dr Kershaw’s Hospice in Oldham, both of which were hit financially hard by the pandemic. ....

The Charity has also been excluded from the Government’s coronavirus relief funding for hospices, due to its partnership with the NHS.
Whilst care and support at the Hospice is continuing, this huge drop in income is putting the future of hospice services in our local area at risk, the Charity’s Chief Executive explains,
“The Hospice was funded and built over thirty years ago thanks to a huge local fundraising campaign, backed by The Bucks Herald, and it is thanks to the continued generosity of our supporters that we have been able to extend our services and increase the number of patients we can support over the years,” says Jo Turner. ....

AN elderly couple evacuated from a flooded retirement village are now safely settled with their family whilst other residents have been moved to a hotel.
Geoff Enright, 94, and wife Rose, 87, were among around 50 residents rescued by firefighters from Weaver Court yesterday after it was cut off with no heating or power by Storm Christoph.

Residents and staff were ferried in dingies to Memorial Court whilst a multi-agency crisis team found them emergency accommodation.
Anxious families had waited all day to find out what was happening as their loved ones were stranded inside the care home, where all the telephone lines were down. ....
