David’s family surprised him, songwriter/singer Chris Crockett serenaded him, and Gil Mathew told outrageous stories about him (some outright lies). Past President Susan Drown and her committee chose a theme of theater and the arts, because David is an avid supporter and rarely misses an Off Broad Street performance. David’s longtime friend and cohort-in-crime, Maudie Walker, donated a Fourth of July wreath that she purchased at the American Legion Post 130 Memorial Day Service. Jay Cooper, who catered the event, later auctioned off the wreath for $500 to successful bidder Bart Reibe via telephone … ....
LA Junta Tribune Several students from La Junta Junior and Senior High Schools earned high honors at the Otero Arts Festival writing categories earlier this month. In the poetry division, Abby Amerine took second place in seventh-grade poetry with her poem Far Away. Josslyn Marx earned honorable mention honors with the poem Sister. The instructor for both girls is Norma Moore. In eighth-grade poetry, Alonso Lucero was the winner with the poem The Dark. Adam Avila was second with the poem Fame to Frame. Alexis McClure earned honorable mention with The Perfect World. Their instructor is Kellie Buhr. In ninth-grade poetry, Chevelle Hogan was second with Who is this Boy? Joseph Six was third with A Red-orange Mystery and Myah Hernandez was honorable mention with Dear Self. Their instructor is Nicole Haberman. ....

After a year without events and less staff on board due to pandemic-related layoffs, California’s Most Beautiful Fairgrounds needs some spring cleaning. An enthusiastic group of NevCo Fair lovers is planning a May 1 work day. “Excitement is over the top for this project,” says committee member Debbie Prisk Olsen. “The scope of work is daunting, but we can do this!” Individuals, families, service organizations, nonprofits, high school students and everyone willing to roll up their sleeves are invited to trim flowers and bushes, spread compost, prep lawns for mowing, pressure wash and paint structures, whack weeds, rake pine needles, and pick up pine cones, sticks and trash (monetary donations also accepted). The plan is to organize two four-hour shifts: 8 a.m. to noon and noon to 4 p.m. Volunteers are asked to sign up by completing a form at http://www.NevadaCountyFair.com ....

With his family at his side, Douglas E. Moore, 65, of Orwell Township, Rome, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday evening, Dec. 13, 2020. Doug was born on March 16, 1955, a son of Norma (Gore) and the late Clarence E. Moore. He was a graduate of Northeast Bradford High School Class of 1973. Following graduation, Doug was employed by Osram-Sylvania/GTP where he continued to work for over 40 years until he retired in 2011. On July 16, 1977, Doug married Susan King and together they welcomed two sons Aaron and Dustin. A life-long resident of Orwell, Doug had a passion for hunting and enjoyed spending time outdoors.
