Seventy-eight Oklahomans living at the Oaklawn Retreat in Jacksonville, Ill., boarded a train one day in 1895.
They were headed back to their home state, the young prairie town of Norman, and the new private sanitarium that would care for them.
The first patient, a woman from Woodward County, was admitted on June 15, 1895. That was the beginning of what is now known as Griffin Memorial Hospital, on the city’s near east side. ....

For Empire Jiu-Jitsu owner Dustin Brooks, the martial arts discipline is more than a hobby. It’s a means of catharsis.
After practicing Jiu-Jitsu for 20 years, the second-degree black belt decided to open his own martial arts gym at 2843 Indian Hills Rd. in northwest Norman. Between the COVID-19 pandemic and bouts of winter storms, opening the gym on Indian Hills Road in northwest Norman was not without obstacles, but Brooks said the business, now in its third month, is gaining momentum.
“We announced the opening in August, and expected to open in the fall, but COVID-19 put us back, and the ice storms put us back, so we were open several months later, but we knew people were waiting for us,” Brooks said. ....

Subterranean Discovery: Medieval Welsh Abbey Tunnel from Norman Invasion Period

Karol Krempa, head of the castle s renovation and investment department, says further work is vital to understanding and safeguarding the castle, but they can’t rule out that there might be “much more to the 270-meter section of tunnel than we are currently aware of.” This brick tunnel section serves as a groundwater runoff channel and initial inspections suggest the tunnel in  Wales runs parallel to the Angiddy Brook flowing through the Wye Valley.
This observation suggests the Welsh abbey tunnels might have also served a “ hydrological function ” similar to the Ducal Castle tunnel in Poland. Tunnels are notoriously dangerous discoveries for after being excavated they can threaten to undermine the stability of the surrounding architecture.  ....

JACKSON, Wyo. (AP) Upon hearing Laura Meadows utter their names, Norman and Handy pushed off toward the Linn family’s small pasture pulling a sleigh full of hay.
The two stout, blond Haflinger horses knew the drill, easily jerking forward hundreds of pounds of cured grass cut off the Serenity Ranch last summer. The hay was bound for the rumens of nine Salers cattle and a handful of rescue donkeys and llamas that hang with the herd. On this Wednesday in late January, Norman and Handy were cooperative a ....
