George Floyd memorial this weekend will exhibit murals from uprising for the first time

George Floyd memorial this weekend will exhibit murals from uprising for the first time Justice for George memorial will exhibit murals from the uprising for the first time.  May 20, 2021 11:11am Text size Copy shortlink: It s been nearly a year since George Floyd was killed by Minneapolis police. Boarded-up storefronts, buildings set aflame and days of protests are burned into people s minds and hearts. For Leesa Kelly, Kenda Zellner-Smith and Tina Burnside, last May s uprising sparked a mission they hope to pursue for years to come. Zellner-Smith and Kelly both started collecting the plywood murals that artists painted with messages of solidarity, portraits of Floyd and demands for an end to racialized violence and inequality. They soon joined forces under the banner Save the Boards to Memorialize the Movement with the support of Burnside, of the Minnesota African-American Heritage Museum and Gallery.

The allure of a perfect temp job - Times Gazette

The allure of a perfect temp job John Grindrod Guest columnist While I’ve been so very blessed in my life to have never been unable either to find or keep a job, and currently still have the physical and mental capacity to work full time, I’m always quite interested in any news about jobs. In early January I read of a temporary job opportunity driving one of the most unique vehicles you’re likely to find cruising down the highway. Oscar Mayer announced it was looking for 12 recent college graduates to slide behind the wheel of that big hot dog on wheels, the Weinermobile, which has a history that dates all the way back to 1936. Currently, there are six traveling America’s roads. Given the number of highways and byways throughout this great nation, consider yourself lucky if you ever have a sighting. I have one under my belt, spotting one while on vacation in the early 1990s on Interstate 75 outside Atlanta.

Minneapolis' late-lamented Intermedia Arts writes its final chapter – a $1 million check

Copy shortlink: The saga of Intermedia Arts, the Minneapolis multigenre venue that served marginalized communities for decades before running into fiscal trouble four years ago, is coming to a quiet, almost storybook close. After selling its building near the trendy Lyn-Lake district and paying off debts, the organization donated $1 million to help Artspace, the nonprofit developer, acquire the Northrup King Building as a crown jewel for the northeast Minneapolis arts scene. Now, for its final act, Intermedia is giving its remaining $1 million to a like-minded Minneapolis arts organization, Public Functionary. Let me tell you, it s been a long four years, said Omar Akbar, Intermedia s co-president. But this is fantastic news because we were able to preserve some of the value of the organization, rather than have it keep down a path to bankruptcy and a slow, ugly death.
