The rapidly growing state-supported arts infrastructure in Saudi Arabia tends to overshadow the lesser-known history of independent artist-led initiatives. The pioneering modernist Mohammed Alsaleem, for example, is known for establishing Dar Al Funoon Al Sa’udiyyah (The Saudi Art House) in Riyadh in 1979, the first space where artists could gather, work, mentor each other, and stage exhibitions at a time when there were no art schools or galleries. The Kingdom has gone through various stages in its cultural development from the 1960’s oil boom, a time of artistic productivity and government scholarships to study art abroad, to the tumultuous late 1970s of Islamic militancy and religious conservatism until the 2000s. “The 1960s was a time when art flourished in the Kingdom. In Riyadh, exhibitions by modernist painters were held in football clubs in order to engage the public,” says Raneem Farsi ....

Today, UMass Dartmouth and the College of Visual and Performing Arts announced a $45,000 award from the Henry Luce Foundation’s American Art Program for the exhibition Nancy Holt: Massachusetts. The exhibition celebrating the Massachusetts-born artist Nancy Holt will feature scholarly research, public programming, and the post-humous American premiere of Holt’s room-sized installation Electrical System (1982).

.-The Armory Show announced the exhibitor list for its 2021 edition, featuring 194 leading international galleries from 38 countries. The fair will take place from September 9-12, 2021 at the state-of-the-art Javits Center – The Armory Show’s new, permanent venue, as announced in March 2020 during last year’s edition.
The fair will offer an enhanced in-person experience for exhibitors, collectors, and New York’s cultural community. For the first time, all exhibitors at The Armory Show will be integrated under one roof. €1500 Caravaggio Found In Madrid Auction House
Old Master dealers Colnaghi gallery have agreed to coordinate the scholarly assessment, scientific analysis, and restoration of an Ecce Homo painting thought to be by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
The work, titled The Crowning of Thorns, was due to go under the hammer at Ansorena auction house on 8 April with a guide price of €1,500. The painting is owned by the three children of Antonio Pérez de Castro, founder of Madrid’s IADE design school.
The oil on canvas depicting Christ being crowned with thorns was initially attributed to the “circle” of the 17th-century Spanish painter José de Ribera. The painting, which has been in the family of the Pé rez de Castro Méndez for centuries, was set to be sold at auction in Madrid before the family was alerted of its possible reattribution.
