Health officials from Baker, five other counties ask state to ease COVID restrictions

Public health officials from six rural counties, including Baker, have sent a letter to the Oregon Health Authority asking state officials to ease COVID-19 restrictions in the counties and give local health officials authority to decide whether more stringent limits are needed to combat the virus.
The Dec. 28 letter is from public health administrators in Baker, Grant, Harney, Klamath, Lake and Malheur counties.
Nancy Staten is the director of the Baker County Health Department.
The county officials contend that the current restrictions for counties in the extreme risk category, including Baker, Klamath and Malheur, have âsignificantly different implications in rural counties than in more densely populated ones.â ....

Baker Cityâs first state-sponsored COVID-19 testing event didnât officially start until 11 oâclock Wednesday morning, but 10 minutes before the hour, half a dozen cars were already waiting.
They lined up on the snowpacked parking lot at the Baker City Church of the Nazarene at Cedar Street and Hughes Lane, exhaust pipes puffing tendrils of fog into the 32-degree air.
Ray Hobizal of the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) said more than 100 people pre-registered for a free test, which was recommended but not required.
By the end of the event around 4:30 p.m., a total of 130 people had been tested, said Holly Kerns, a public information officer for Baker County. ....

County Commissioner Mark Bennett says he might have had COVID

That experience, which he said happened about a month ago, only heightened his concern.
Bennett has served as the countyâs incident commander â in effect, the lead elected official in the countyâs response â since the pandemic started in March.
Bennett said he knew three of the four county residents who have died due to the virus.
He also has a cousin who died from COVID-19.
And his son-in-lawâs uncle died recently in a California hospital where he was being treated for the virus.
But Bennettâs experience with COVID-19 became even more personal in November when first his granddaughter, a college student visiting from California, and then his wife, Patti, tested positive. ....
