Leavenworth mayor disputes county commissioner's comments


Members of the Leavenworth City Commission are taking exception with recent comments from a county commissioner.
During a Leavenworth City Commission meeting Tuesday, Mayor Nancy Bauder discussed remarks County Commissioner Jeff Culbertson made last week.
Culbertson’s remarks were made to the Lansing City Council as he discussed a proposal for a bridge project to connect Eisenhower Road in Leavenworth County with Missouri 152 Highway in Platte County, Missouri.
Culbertson said he believed there was hesitancy to support the project among some Leavenworth city commissioners because they are worried about losing the Centennial Bridge and they are worried the new bridge could lead to Lansing or even Basehor outgrowing Leavenworth. ....

City to make parade decision Feb. 2

While some commissioners seemed in favor of moving forward this week, the Leavenworth City Commission will wait until Feb. 2 to decide whether to allow the St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The parade typically takes place each year in downtown Leavenworth. But city officials canceled the event last year because of concerns about COVID-19. Commissioners are now considering whether to allow the parade to take place this year amid ongoing concerns about the pandemic.
The parade is organized by a private committee, but the event requires permission from the city government.
Commissioners discussed the parade Tuesday during a study session. ....

County commissioners discussed their state legislative priorities during a meeting Wednesday.
And commissioners for the city of Leavenworth also reviewed their state legislative priorities this week.
Priorities for the Leavenworth City Commission includes expansion of Medicaid and support for the replacement of Centennial Bridge.
State lawmakers will begin their 2021 session Monday in Topeka.

The city of Leavenworth is still offering grants to community support organizations and small businesses that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Assistant City Manager Taylour Tedder updated city commissioners on the grant program Tuesday.
Tedder said the city set aside $750,000 for grants to community support organizations and $250,000 for grants for small businesses.
City Manager Paul Kramer has said federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding used by the city for payroll expenses for public safety employees freed up money for the grant program.
So far, the city has awarded $325,000 in grants to 15 community support organizations such as food banks and other nonprofit agencies. ....
