BROOKLYN (CN) Lauren Salzman, who helped to run a secret sex cult within a self-help organization that her mother co-founded, was sentenced to five years of probation in Brooklyn federal court on Wednesday.
Pitched as a women’s mentorship group, DOS also called “The Vow” operated as a pyramid scheme with sex “slaves” who were roped into the sub-group of NXIVM (pronounced Nexium) by providing nude photos and sensitive information as collateral. ....

Former NXIVM Member Lauren Salzman Sentenced

Another high-ranking member of NXIVM was sentenced on Wednesday.
Lauren Salzman will get no prison time and has been sentenced to time served plus five years of probation.
In 2019, she pleaded guility to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy charges.
She was facing nine years in prison, but federal prosecutors pushed for a lesser sentence in consideration of her help into the investigation of former NXIVM leader Keith Raniere. Her mother, former NXIVM president Nancy Salzman, recently apologized for not protecting her daughter from Raniere.
Nancy Salzman had sent a letter to a federal judge urging leniency for her daughter, saying that she s responsible for Lauren s legal troubles. ....

NXIVM was formed by Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman in the 1990s and billed itself as a self-help multi-level marketing company.
The company ceased operations last year after a New York Times exposé alleged that female members were used as sex slaves within the group.
The exposé prompted a federal investigation, and several members, including Raniere and “Smallville” actress Allison Mack, were charged with federal crimes. ....

Lauren Salzman was once a high-ranking leader of the purported self-help group Nxivm and a loyal member of founder Keith Raniere’s inner circle.
But ahead of her sentencing Wednesday in Brooklyn, she shared in court documents why she eventually cooperated with the government and testified against him.
In 2019, Salzman pleaded guilty to racketeering and racketeering conspiracy charges. She could face seven to nine years in prison, but prosecutors recommended less time, writing to US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis that her cooperation was “extraordinary” and that her testimony “substantially contributed” to the prosecution of Raniere. ....
