Maynard voters elected two new School Committee members at the May 8 annual Town Election. In the only contest, Elizabeth Albota and Hilary Griffiths won their bid for one of the two seats on the School Committee, with 404 and 362 votes respectively, according to unofficial results from the town clerk’s office. Toni Hammond, who was also vying for a seat on the School Committee, lost her bid, garnering only 205 votes. Fewer than 550 voters about 6% of Maynard s registered voters cast ballots in the election. Results from Stow Stow also held its annual Town Election on May 8. Nancy Arsenault was declared the winner for a seat on the Planning Board with 426 votes. Incumbent challenger Lenny Golder garnered 102 votes, according to Linda Hathaway, town clerk. ....
Print Edition: June 17, 2015 After joking about looking like wizards in full regalia backstage, the 2015 class of UFV graduates filed onto the floor of the Abbotsford Centre, led by the beat of a traditional Stó:lo drum. On June 11 and 12, four separate convocation ceremonies saw graduates from all faculties cross the stage, with friends and families blowing air horns and cheering in the stands. Each ceremony lasted roughly three-and-a-half hours, as over 2,000 grads received their credentials and shook UFV president Mark Evered’s hand. UFV administration, including Evered and chancellor Gwen Point who attended UFV convocation despiteD her own PhD ceremony occurring at SFU the same day opened the ceremonies with speeches. Evered encouraged students to take advantage of technology while approaching life as “respectful and responsible rebels.” ....

(Kristen Frier) Merging career ambitions, computer algorithms, and virtual coffee, the KPU Alumni Association is looking at joining a new mentorship program to connect the leaders of today with the leaders of tomorrow. The partnership is between KPU Alumni and Ten Thousand Coffees, a program that uses an algorithm to match students with like-minded alumni based on similar fields of study, interests, and career goals. Students then chat online with their mentors over coffee and have career-focused conversations that can include networking, preparing for a future in the workforce, and the steps necessary for alumni to achieve their goals. “In terms of alumni, it really responds to what we hear their key desire is: to share their knowledge and to help support somebody who is in the position they used to be in to give back,” says Nancy Armitage, executive director of the KPU Alumni Association. ....
