Wrestling: NCAA Champion Nick Suriano Would Fill a Critical Gap in the Ohio State Lineup

NCAA champions don t hit the transfer portal every day, so when New Jersey standout and Rutgers grad Nick Suriano s name surfaced as a portal entrant earlier this week, it sent reverberations across the sport. The two-time national finalist and 2019 NCAA Champion is one of the most talented lightweights of his generation, and will be a huge injection of star power for whatever school lands him.
Sources close to Ohio State s wrestling program told Eleven Warriors there is mutual interest in bringing the four-time New Jersey high school champion to Columbus.
Suriano, who graduated from Rutgers in the spring and is the school s only NCAA wrestling champion, has spent the summer in the Southwest training with the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club at Arizona State. While the Sun Devils may have the inside track on securing his commitment, James Kratch at NJ.com reported that, The NCAA’s recent name, image and likeness rule changes played a role in Suriano’s decision to purs ....

Some of the toughest matches of Pat Smith s career have come in consolation bouts. The Chaska wrestler was reminded of that Saturday in Fort Worth, Texas, when he had to shake off the disappointment of Friday s semifinal loss at the Olympic wrestling trials and try to forge ahead.
Smith made it to the consolation finals of the Greco-Roman 77-kilogram class, but he dropped a 4-0 decision to RaVaughn Perkins to finish in fourth place. Two other Minnesotans also wrestled for third place in the Greco-Roman division Saturday. Leslie Fuenffinger, a Hibbing native and two-time NCAA champ at Augsburg, pinned Sam Jones in the 60 kg class, while heavyweight Donny Longendyke, an Augsburg alumnus from Vadnais Heights, fell 3-1 to Jacob Mitchell. ....

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Friday at the USA Wrestling Olympic Team Trials was a long day of wrestling, but it was a good day of wrestling for former Buckeyes Kollin Moore and Joey McKenna. Moore and McKenna are both set to appear in the Olympic Team Trial finals on Saturday, vying for a spot in this summer’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

That means Ohio State will have at least one Olympian this summer. McKenna will square-off with Jordan Oliver in the finals of the 65 kg class. The winner of that weight class will still have to qualify the weight for the Olympics at the World Olympic Qualifier in Sofia, Bulgaria, May 6-9. ....

Wrestling: Kollin Moore to Face Kyle Snyder For Spot on the U.S. Olympic Team; Joey McKenna to Face Jordan Oliver

Moore was slated to have faced J den Cox as the precursor to the best-of-three versus Snyder, but the two-time reigning world champion at 92 kg missed weight Friday morning and was removed from the bracket. Cox has trained at least part of the time at the Ohio Regional Training Center since early 2020, and his failure to make weight sent shockwaves throughout the wrestling community.
He ll face Snyder in the finals. Coverage will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed on NBCSports.com and the NBC Sports app.
At 65 kg, McKenna won a pair of impressive victories over high-powered opponents, with a 12-1 tech fall of James Green, the two-time world medalist, and then besting the top-seed, two-time Hodge Trophy winner Zain Retherford in an 8-5 decision with two late takedowns in the second period. ....
