Two of the top teams in class 2A got together Tuesday night at Paul N. Bailey Field in Wellman when the No. 4 ranked Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks hosted No. 7 Durant in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Golden Hawks won game one 5-4 while Durant earned a split taking the second contest 12-9. Mid-Prairie took an early lead in the first game with a pair of unearned runs in the third on three consecutive Wildcat errors. Cain Brown and Kayden Reinier scored in the inning. The Cats responded in the fifth with a four spot, to go up by two on two walks, a Mid-Prairie error and a triple from left fielder Aydin Flockhart. Mid-Prairie came back in the bottom half with a run when Will Cavanagh singled and came home on a wild pitch to make it 4-3. In the sixth, Aidan Rath changed that with one swing of the bat, launching a two-run homer to right centerfield, putting Mid-Prairie up 5-4 and freshman Karson Grout came on in the seventh to earn the save. The Golden Hawk girls won the team championship with a score of 177, beating second place Williamsburg with 143. Mid-Prairie was dominant, automatically qualifying athletes in 13 different events, multiple qualifiers in three different events and winning six event titles. One-two finishes on the night for Mid-Prairie included the 800 with Danielle Hostetler the champ in 2:21.85 and Mitzi Evans second, the 1500 with Hostetler the champ in 4:58.96 and Sydney Yoder second and the 3000 with Hostetler taking her third gold in 11:18.75 and Yoder again second. Other titles included Mitzi Evans winning the 400 in 59.31, the sprint medley team of Maddie Edgington, Alyssa McDowell, Amber Swart and Mitzi Evans in 1:49.78 and the distance medley of Edgington, Tabitha Evans, Swart and Hostetler in 4:20.85. The Mid-Prairie boys track and field team will be in Anamosa Tuesday for their next meet. The Hawks had both Drake and a meet at Newton last week. Cain Brown represented Mid-Prairie in Des Moines. The sophomore was fourth in the high jump competition, clearing 6’3″. As a team, the Golden Hawks last competed Friday at Newton where they placed fifth of 11 teams with 73 points as Thaddeus Shetler won the 1600 in 4:40.49. Other top finishes included Nathan Quinby runner-up in the 100, second for the 4×800 team, third place for Clarke Latcham in the 400 hurdles and third for the 4×400 team. Mid-Prairie is in Anamosa tonight with Central DeWitt, Easton Valley, Independence, Iowa City Liberty, Lisbon, Monticello, Mount Vernon, West Liberty and the Blue Raiders.
