5 Students Honored with First-Year Seminar Writing Prizes

This month, five students were recognized with the First-Year Seminar Writing Prize for essays they wrote in their first-year seminars throughout 2020. A total of 137 first-year students submitted to the contest this year.
Each winner will receive a $100 prize, and each honorable mention will receive a $50 prize. These students will have their work published online along with an audio recording of them reading their essays aloud.
The First-Year Seminar Writing Prize celebrates the work of first-year writers at Wesleyan.
The three winners are:
Nathan Foote ’24, for “Anti-Gospel,” written for Anne Greene’s Place, Character, and Design.
Gissel Ramirez ’24, for “Gissel Not Giselle: Language as an Identity,” written for Lauren Silber’s Why You Can’t Write. ....

A Sioux Falls man has received a double lung transplant after complications in October with COVID-19.
Nathan Foote, 42, went through a severe case of pneumonia after contracting COVID-19 that caused his lungs to become 80% scarred and shrink in size. Following that diagnosis, he was faced with two choices: get a double lung transplant or go into hospice until he dies.
On Jan. 17 he was transported to the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis to undergo testing to get placed on the list. ....

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) A Sioux Falls man has undergone a double lung transplant after suffering complications from COVID-19.
The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported Friday that 42-year-old Nathan Foote suffered severe pneumonia after contracting the disease in October. He suffered severe scarring in his lungs. Doctors said he get a double transplant or die in hospice care.
He was placed on the transplant list in February at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis. He was offered two potential matches but both fell through because of changes in the donors’ health. ....
