Make-A-Wish Mother's Day truck convoy to roll out this weekend


The Make-A-Wish Mother s Day truck convoy will go on this year in Lancaster County and will feature 100 big rigs. The event will kick off Sunday with a special moment of silence at the Wish Angel truck and depart from the Manheim Auto Auction at 1:30 p.m.The convoy will travel along Auction, Junction, Mill and Colebrook roads before turning onto Route 772.From there, the convoy will take Route 283 west until the exit for Rheems and Elizabethtown, then continue on Cloverleaf Road to get to Route 230.The convoy will continue through Mount Joy, then travel on Esbenshade and Strickler roads to get back to Route 772. It wraps up at Route 283.The event will be live-streamed on Facebook.There will also be a chicken dinner drive-thru set up at Country Table Restaurant in Mount Joy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will go toward granting wishes. A bigger Make-A-Wish truck convoy returns to Mother's Day


One year after COVID-19 threw a roadblock in the way of the popular Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day truck convoy, 100 rigs will take part in this year’s event, with people welcomed to line the route.
The 31st annual convoy kicks off at 1:30 p.m. Sunday from the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction in Manheim and ends at Routes 283 and 722 outside Mount Joy. Onlookers will be able to watch from any safe point along the convoy’s route, including Main Street in Mount Joy.
The event will be live-streamed at wishconvoy.org.
A virtual event in 2020 included only the top 30 truck drivers who raised the most money the previous year. They followed a route typically crammed with hundreds of people watching from the road and overpasses. Organizers encouraged the public to watch from home last year. ....

'Unthinkable': Business owners decry new shutdown order, prospect of laying off employees ahead of holidays


Some Lancaster County businesses are opting to keep their doors open into the holiday season, despite restrictions announced by Gov. Tom Wolf on Thursday aimed at curtailing Pennsylvania’s spike in COVID-19 cases.
Wolf ordered restrictions that prohibit indoor dining at bars and restaurants for three weeks. Gyms, theaters and other facilities also have to close during that time, and indoor gatherings and events of more than 10 people are prohibited.
“We have 87 employees that need a job,” John Smucker, owner of Coffee Co., said of why he is choosing to keep his business open. 
Smucker complied with the first shutdown order in the spring and had to lay off his staff of 95 at three locations (Lancaster, New Holland and Mill Creek Square), he said. He started bringing them back in the summer, but he said he cannot do the same again.  ....
