ACMA given $4.2m to enforce News Media Code May 5, 2021 10:02 The Australian Government is setting aside  $4.2 million in the 2021-22 Budget for the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to support the implementation and administration of the government’s new News Media and Digital Platforms Mandatory Bargaining Code. This is despite numerous publishers signing agreements with tech giants Google and Facebook outside of the code, including News Corp, Seven West Media, Australian Community Media, Private Media, Solstice Media and Schwartz Media. Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, Paul Fletcher, said the funding would provide ACMA with the resources to enforce the code.

ACM signs letter of intent for Facebook news deal May 4, 2021 11:28 Australian Community Media (ACM) is the latest publisher to enter into talks with Facebook which will see the latter pay for news published on its platform. ACM announced it has signed a Letter Of Intent (LOI) for a multi-year agreement to provide news and information to millions of Australians through Facebook News, subject to both companies formally signing the deal. Over 40 ACM regional, rural and suburban mastheads and publications will be covered by the agreement, including  Newcastle Herald, Canberra Times, Bendigo Advertiser, The Advocate, Katherine Times, Illawarra Mercury, and more.

Catalano’s ACM signs content deal with Facebook Save Share Antony Catalano’s Australian Community Media has signed a letter of intent with Facebook to provide news content from its newspapers – including the Canberra Times and the Newcastle Herald – to the social media giant. Australian Community Media is the latest publisher to sign a deal to be paid to share content on the social platform.  AP ACM managing director Tony Kendall said: “We’re passionate about keeping our communities strong, informed and connected and this partnership will ensure our trusted regional and rural news will reach new audiences. The support also enables ACM to continue to build our digital platforms and grow our audience for our original news.”

CPA currently represents 81 members and 160 regional newspapers, which provide local news to regional communities in print and online. Authorisation will enable CPA members to collectively negotiate with each of Facebook and Google, engage in discussions with each other and exchange information about those negotiations.
