Emma Barnett is following in the footsteps of her predecessors, Jenni Murray and Jane Garvey, in sounding weary every time she introduces it. The drama is usually unrelated to the rest of Woman’s Hour and yet takes up 15 minutes of its allotted time. That’s a quarter of the programme and means that Woman’s Hour is actually only 45 minutes long. A small thing, sure, but this false advertising has been annoying me for at least 10 years. ....
BBC Radio got it wrong about Prince Philip. First there was the overwhelming coverage: switching between Radios 3 and 4, it seemed that nothing else â Covid? Syria? â had happened. Then, there was the mangling of schedules. Two days after his death, I tuned in to Radio 3 to hear the always independent-minded Paul Morley talking about anti-establishment art. Instead, I got Daniel Barenboim playing Mozart. Nothing against the latter: on the contrary. But the unexplained assumptions behind the change are intriguing. Was Morley thought too provoking because the duke was not famous as a fan of the avant garde? Was an evening of classical music considered inherently respectful? Posher? More soothing? ....

The creation of this nature park on the Lake Ontario waterfront is part of the first phase of revitalizing the once vibrant hub of Ontario Place, an entertainment venue that operated as a theme park from 1971 until 2011. In 2019, the Ontario government formally launched a search for developers to bring the site back to life. But last year, the World Monuments Fund added Ontario Place to the 2020 World Monuments Watch, a global selection of 25 at risk cultural heritage sites. The action rejected Ontario’s vision of private development and instead encouraged Ontario Place to be an open and publicly accessible site. ....
