KXLY June 28, 2021 3:47 PM Connor Sarles SPOKANE, Wash. The City of Spokane is extending the operating times of their cooling centers due to the heatwave. Mayor Nadine Woodward made the announcement Monday, pushing back the open time from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Since the cooling centers opened this weekend, Woodward says 53 people have used the Looff Carrousel center, and people stayed for long visits at the city’s libraries. Traffic has not gone up yet, but Woodward says they are ready to take up to 1,000 people if needed. We’re extending hours at @SpokaneCity cooling centers until 8 PM thru this heatwave. 53 people used the Looff Carrousel over the weekend. Korean War memorial dedicated in Spokane Ceremony held on 71st anniversary of U.S. joining conflict By Kip Hill, The Spokesman-Review Published: June 28, 2021, 6:32pm Share: Spokane Temperatures near the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena climbed to near 100 on Sunday afternoon, but you couldn’t get 93-year-old Dick Kirkendall to take off his sweatshirt. “This sweatshirt was a Father’s Day present from my two daughters,” a beaming Kirkendall told a group of visitors to Sunday’s dedication of a Korean War memorial in Spokane. Screen-printed on the front was an image of the USS Southerland, where Kirkendall was stationed during the war that America entered 71 years ago Sunday. The six-year effort to get a monument to what is often referred to as America’s Forgotten War culminated in the dedication, attended by Kirkendall and fellow Korean War veteran Tom Carter, an Army sergeant who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. ....

The Spokane Quaranteam has a mission to distribute thousands of water bottles to those in need over the duration of the heat wave. The cooling center will be open from 11 am to 7 pm beginning Saturday and remain operational for the heatwave duration. Coca-Cola provided a pallet of bottled water donated by Desani to the cooling center. All Spokane Public Library locations are also available and can accommodate those who need relief from the extreme daytime temperatures during business hours and at COVID occupancy capacities.
