Confederate Memorial Day observances draw protest in Greenville


Pouring rain didn t stop activist Efia Nwangaza.
Standing at the Confederate monument in downtown Greenville near the corner of Main and Elrod streets Saturday, she led a protest where she got a $465 ticket from police nearly a month ago for a picketing violation when she refused to remove a Stop murder by police sign from the monument outside Springwood Cemetery. 
Our ancestors and those who fought for the dignity and worth of humanity went through a great deal more inconveniences and pain than we are going through with just a momentary rain shower, she said.  
The demonstration came as states across the South prepare for observances of Confederate Memorial Day. The day is to be recognized on Monday, April 26, in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, and it s to be recognized on May 10 in the Carolinas.  ....

MS. PSAKI:  Well, again, I can speak to what the President’s point of view is, which is that it’s important to provide an opportunity for peaceful protest.  That’s what he’s continued to advocate for, what he has consistently advocated for.

Greenville: President Joe Biden makes virtual visit plugging $1.9 trillion infrastructure plan

President Joe Biden made a virtual stop in Greenville Tuesday to advance his $1.9 trillion American Jobs Plan s infrastructure package.The president took part in a virtual tour of the electric vehicle battery facility, Proterra, in Greenville.Proterra s first manufacturing facility was established in Greenville, South Carolina, in 2015. The Colorado company also has other manufacturing facilities in California designing and manufacturing zero-emission electric transit vehicles. Greenville Mayor Knox White was at Proterra to welcome the president to his virtual visit. I want you to know over 10 years ago the city of Greenville got Proterra to Greenville, White said. Biden to virtually visit local electric bus manufacturing in Greenville


President Joe Biden will take a virtual tour of an electric bus manufacturer in Greenville later this afternoon.
Biden s virtual tour of Proterra is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and will be livestreamed. Mayor Knox White and Proterra s CEO Jack Allen will also be in attendance.
After the tour, the president is expected to deliver remarks about the American Jobs Plan s infrastructure investments, which includes $25 billion for zero-emissions vehicles and $20 billion for electric school buses.
Proterra manufactures zero-emission electric transit vehicles and develops electric vehicle technology solutions  their fleet includes electric school buses, public transit buses and delivery trucks. ....

Orange Beach: Beach season is heating up, and the coastal region is getting federal money to help recover from tourism losses caused by the pandemic. The Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration said Thursday that it will provide the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau with $800,000 for a marketing program. The money will be combined with $200,000 in local funding. The agency is helping communities nationwide implement programs to counter economic hardships amid the pandemic, said Dennis Alvord, acting assistant secretary for economic development. “This investment will fund a strategic, multi-faceted marketing campaign designed to attract visitors to the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach area, resulting in continuous economic growth and job creation,” he said in a statement.
