A special court formed eight years ago to handle cybercrime in Bangladesh has completed work on a fraction of thousands of cases in its docket, and obtained only 30 convictions, court records show.
Due to this backlog, and the difficulty of getting bail under vaguely worded laws aimed at regulating online speech, hundreds of accused people languish in jail for months, lawyers and investigators say.
“This is true that the conviction rate at the Cyber Tribunal is low. Many lawyers try to point to flaws of the investigation and prosecution, but this is not the case,” Nazrul Islam Shamim, the tribunal’s public prosecutor, told BenarNews. ....

A Dhaka tribunal today gave the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of police 30 more days to complete the probe in a Digital Security Act case filed against cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, and nine others.
Judge Mohammad Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the order after Md Afchhar Ahmed, a sub-inspector of the CTTC unit and also investigation officer (IO) of the case, submitted an application seeking 30 days more time to complete the investigation.
The tribunal directed the IO to submit the report by April 15 after a full investigation into the case. ....

A Dhaka tribunal today ordered Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit for further investigation into the case filed against cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore, writer Mushtaq Ahmed, Rashtrochinta activist Didarul Islam Bhuiyan and eight others under the Digital Security Act.
Judge Ash Sams Joglul Hossain of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal passed the order after the prosecution submitted a petition seeking further investigation into the case.
The tribunal directed CTTC to submit a probe report to it by March 23. ....
