NEW BEDFORD Naomi King is a stay-at-home mom whose two oldest sons have autism. She has five children, ages 2,4,6,9 and 11. But even when the two oldest are going to school because COVID-19 school reopening conditions prioritize in-person classes for students with special needs, her life as a parent is hard.
It s hard for them. They have limited speech, King said. It s expensive. It s a lot. I m trying to save up for a car to take them to places but I m always on a limited income.
And, a key part of her support system is gone this year, King said. She lost her mother in 2019. It s very different for us now, she said. Still, King she can point to both negative and positive differences in her life this year. For the third year in a row she s applied for the Neediest Families Fund assistance through the Salvation Army, receiving toys for her children and food cards that she needs. ....
