LAHORE: An accountability court has approved appointment of a lawyer as pleader of Nusrat Shehbaz, the wife of Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, to regularly appear on her behalf in the trial proceedings of a money laundering reference.
Earlier, the trial court had declared Ms Shehbaz an absconder for avoiding her appearance in the proceedings.
Ms Shehbaz, who at present lives in London, challenged the decision before the Lahore High Court through a special attorney. The high court set aside the trial court’s order as her lawyer accepted a condition of the NAB to appoint a pleader to attend the trial proceedings on her behalf. ....

LAHORE:Punjab University Institute of Geology organised the sixth Pakistan Geological Congress (PGC-21) online after a lapse of 30 years.
PU Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar, Prof Dr Dauwee from Netherlands, Prof Dr Nuretin from Turkey, Dr Abdul Qayyum from Netherlands and Dr Hummad Ghani from Germany, Dr Nadeem from UEPL, Tahir Maqsood from oil industry, Islamabad, Dr Nawaz Chaudhary and Dr Armaghan Faisal from Punjab University delivered lectures. More than 400 participants attend series of lectures from all over the world.
The congress held with the theme of “Recent Developments in Himalayan Geology” consisted of two parts. The first part featured student poster competition that was inaugurated by PU Faculty of Science Dean Prof Dr Muhammad Sharif. Punjab University (PU) Institute of Geology on Wednesday organised the 6th Pakistan Geological Congress (PGC-21) themed ‘Recent Developments in Himalayan Geology’ after a gap of 30 years.
PU Pro Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Saleem Mazhar said the main objective of the congress was to bring together the leading national and international geoscientists from academia and industry to promote research.
He said the exchange of research and experience sharing would enable the facilitation of a thorough investigation of geological phenomena.

To support fair and expeditious resolution of the inmates’ grievances, the provincial government has proposed a ‘Complaints Redressal System’ in a draft recently prepared to amend the Punjab Prison Rules 2020.
The draft was prepared following claims of inmates that their complaints were not forwarded to the authorities concerned as the officials about whom they complained were part of the jail management. A comprehensive mechanism has been devised in a new chapter for promptly redressing the complaints. The inmates earlier used to complain to the officials who visited the jails, prison superintendents and the district and session judges. ....

Punjab government has prepared a draft to amend the Prison Rules, under which women prisoners will be provided the opportunity to get basic education and borrow books from education centres established in prisons.
Several rules and sub-clauses have been included in the Punjab Prison Rules 2020.
Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar had expressed his intention to reform prison rules last year. Provincial Law Minister Raja Basharat formed a working group led by PTI MPA Aisha Nawaz Chaudhry, which reviewed the rules along with the stakeholders and proposed amendments. The meetings were attended by representatives of the civil society, prison officials and advocate general. ....
