Borders Book Festival: Abbotsford to be venue on new dates

THE Borders Book Festival will move from its traditional venue this year, organisers have announced.
The 2021 edition of the Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival had been due to take place at Harmony Garden, Melrose, in September.
But organisers have now announced that the festival will be moved to Abbotsford, with it set to take place between November 2-7.
It is hoped “that Abbotsford will be able to welcome audiences”, say organisers.

Meet Qilan, a New Roots gardener

Qilan’s baby loves tomatoes, especially big tomatoes. This is why Qilan plants these, among other vegetables, at Harmony Garden with support from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Salt Lake City’s New Roots program. Like so many other gardeners with New Roots, Qilan grows vegetables both to supplement her income and to feed her family. She also gardens because she enjoys the practice and the memories it evokes. When she was a child in China, her “baba and mama planted many plants” and sometimes she would join to help. Now that she herself is a mother and living in Utah, she has big plans for her garden. ....

Borders Book Festival 2021: Event is planned for September

The popular event is usually held in Harmony Garden in Melrose over a long weekend in June.
But this year, organisers are hoping to push it back three months – coronavirus permitting.
Having delivered a successful digital programme of more than 40 free author talks and workshops last year – attracting 21,000 views – festival directors Alistair Moffat and Paula Ogilvie have already begun work on the line-up for 2021.
And this year they hope to be able to run the event over five days instead of the usual four.
Mr Moffat said: “After a difficult 2020 for everyone, we are delighted to be starting the New Year with the positive news that the Baillie Gifford Borders Book Festival plans to return at the new time of September in the hope of being able to welcome our authors and visitors back to Harmony Garden safely. ....

Daily Trust - Man sets self on fire in Jos

Misbahu Usman, a commercial motorcycle rider who witnessed the incident, told
Daily Trust that the victim arrived in Peace and Reconciliation Garden, in Jos as early as 7:30 and poured petrol on himself before setting himself ablaze.
He narrated that: “There were no many people around during the incident and before we realized what was going on, the fire had already dominated the body and there was no water to put off the fire.
“The available sachet water around was not enough to put off the fire.”
The eyewitness added that the relatives of the victim, including his parents, arrived at the scene of the incident crying. ....
