BOISE, Idaho — Thousands of perfectly good meals end up in Treasure Valley landfills every day.
The USDA estimates more than a third of food produced in the United States goes uneaten, totaling upwards of 125 billion pounds of food in the trash.
Those statistics don’t sit well with Julie D’Agostino. That’s why she started Rolling Tomato in 2016. ....

Illinois hospital could have lost millions over decision to stop delivering babies

That would have eliminated millions of dollars in supplemental Medicaid funding each year.
But Gateway kept its status under Illinois Senate Bill 1530, which was signed into law April 2 by Gov. J.B. Pritzker. It amended the Illinois Public Aid Code with a clause that didn t mention Gateway by name, but effectively added it to a list of hospitals allowed to continue in the state s safety-net program, despite not meeting some requirements.
Gateway CEO Bob Moore described the legislation as something of a lifesaver.
If we got out of the safety-net program, this hospital would not be viable, he said Tuesday. We get about $8 million a year in funding from it. ....

Letter: Crisis center deserves this community's support

Letter: Crisis center deserves this community s support
Evansville Courier & Press
We have a great opportunity to strengthen our community, helping individuals and save money.
These goals have always been important for the United Churches of Christ. We and our predecessors were instrumental in starting Deaconess Hospital, The Good Samaritan Home, United Caring Services, and United Family Counseling Services and in bringing Habitat for Humanity to Evansville. We have partnered with other faith communities and secular groups to meet human need. Another such prospect is before us.
The efforts of CAJE (Congregations Acting for Justice and Empowerment) and United Caring Services (UCS) in conjunction with Southwest Behavioral Health to establish a crisis care center deserve wide community support. This will give police an alternative to jail or the emergency room when dealing with mental health or intoxication/substance abuse calls. ....
