ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A handful of environmental and advocacy groups sued the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and its commissioner, Doug Vincent-Lang, on Tuesday, claiming the department violated administrative procedure and the Alaska Constitution when Vincent-Lang repealed a ban this year that had kept personal watercraft out of critical habitat areas in Kachemak Bay.
Fish and Game announced in December 2020 that the regulation barring personal watercraft, commonly known as jet skis, from the Kachemak Bay Critical Habitat Area and Fox River Flats Critical Habitat Area was being repealed. That regulation change went into effect in January of this year. ....

HOMER, Alaska Personal watercrafts will be allowed on some Alaska waters that are considered critical wildlife habitats for the first time in 20 years after lobbying by recreational groups and a request by the governor for departments to streamline regulations.
The Department of Fish and Game announced last week that a rule that banned the watercrafts, often known as Jet Skis, in parts of Kachemak Bay and the Fox River Flats had been repealed, the Homer News reported. The change will take effect on Jan. 9. ....

Personal watercraft, commonly known as Jet Skis, will once again be allowed in Kachemak Bay and the Fox River Flats near Homer.
Lt. Gov. Kevin Meyer signed off last Thursday on the lifting of a 19-year-old ban on the small watercraft in the bay. It goes into effect Jan. 9.
The decision was proposed by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game last year after Jet Ski enthusiasts, mainly the Personal Watercraft Club of Alaska, lobbied state officials for years.
The proposal was controversial and opposed by environmental groups that say state documents show personal watercraft are detrimental to marine life in the bay. ....
