Schapiro: Campaign as crash course in Va. government

Glenn Youngkin, the 2021 Republican nominee for governor, is Terry McAuliffe in 2009.
Like McAuliffe in his failed bid for the Democratic nomination 12 years ago, Youngkin comes to the campaign as a big name in Washington, with big bucks and a big problem: He knows
bupkis about state government.
And it might be among the reasons he’s ducking debates with McAuliffe.
The University of Richmond law school’s Carl Tobias, who tracks politics and law, said after Youngkin punted on the traditional opening debate before a lawyers group, “It probably is another data point in controlling the message, and questions from good lawyers would likely show how little he knows about Virginia government.” ....

Opinion: The Case for Putting Climate Labels on Meat

Last month’s Fox News-fueled brouhaha over the ban on beef that wasn’t was a reminder of many things, none of which reflects well on the current state of conservative media. But it would be a mistake to allow a hefty serving of bad-faith fear mongering to end an important conversation before it begins.
No, President Joe Biden is not coming for your burgers. Yes, if we’re going to avert the worst impacts of climate change, Americans are almost certainly going to need to start eating less meat.
Livestock accounts for 14.5 percent of total man-made greenhouse gas emissions, and meat and dairy are by far the worst dietary offenders combined, they account for an estimated 80 percent of a typical American’s food-related emissions. There’s widespread scientific agreement that eating less meat could help avert the worst impacts of climate change, and recent research suggests such a shift may even be necessary independent of any other emission-curbing efforts. George Gascón was elected Los Angeles district attorney after promising to end “tough on crime” prosecutions, free people from overcrowded prisons and hold police accountable for misconduct.
But three months into his tenure, law enforcement leaders across California have launched an aggressive campaign to thwart his signature reforms. Gascón is facing court challenges and a rightwing backlash, and some are now pushing to recall him from office.
The stakes are enormous. Gascón’s success or failure could determine whether young people in LA are sentenced to life behind bars, whether elderly people get a chance to come home after decades in prison, and whether the DA’s office pursues criminal cases against police for misconduct and unjust killings. ....
