Saskatoon residents enjoy sun and warm temperatures – but cold weather soon to return

After suffering through a polar vortex, Saskatoon is now seeing above seasonal temperatures, peaking at 5 C on Monday, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
“This is a warm wind, it s coming right from Alberta, it is a Chinook,” said meteorologist Terri Lang.
“They re getting quite warm, and in fact, even had some thunderstorms this morning in central Alberta if you can believe that, that s how warm the air is.”
Those at Optimist Hill took advantage of the warmer temperatures.
“We re going to be open on Monday, Tuesday this week which is not normal for us,” said Optimist Hill co-chair Joe Van’t Hof. ....

Last season, Motsi said volunteers were having to groom and maintain the tracks once a week at most.
With so much traffic on the trails, volunteers are out constantly making sure tracks are ready for crowds.
“It needs to be torn up and reset to have a good skiing experience. With the number of people, it’s getting icier faster, so we are (maintaining tracks) much more frequently this year.”
Environment Canada senior meteorologist David Phillips said 31 days of freezing temperatures have elapsed since late January.
Conditions are expected to get warmer thanks to a Pacific weather system that will blow warm air across the prairies. ....

Usually, on a sunny, winter day with no wind, Optimist Hill would be buzzing with skiers, snowboarders, and tubers.
However, with this recent spell of extreme cold covering all of Saskatchewan, Optimist Hill had to temporarily close in order to keep staff and all patrons at the Saskatoon resort safe from the elements.
We have to really be mindful of the cold temperatures but also the windchill factor, Optimist Hill project chair Rob Letts said. The area we are typically looking at is the minus 25 to 30 range (for closing), including the windchill. ....
