The horror series from producer Ridley Scott, which was originally shown on the US channel AMC in 2018 and now finally arrives on BBC Two, follows a boatload of arctic explorers on the run from a vengeful spirit that dwells in those frozen wastes. Ice-monsters may be fictional (at least, one would hope so), but the show is based on historical fact. It s the latest retelling of the doomed 1845-46 expedition of Captain John Franklin and Francis Crozier, and their two ominously named ships – Erebus (one of the rivers in the Greek underworld) and Terror. ....

John Ross, commanding the HMS Isabella, and William Parry in the HMS Alexander are farther north along the western Greenland coast than any previous explorers. They assume this land of glaciers and stark mountains is uninhabited. But they’re wrong. They spy several figures running on a hill near shore. Ross assumes they’re shipwrecked sailors in need of rescue, and he steers the Isabella to get closer. But they turn out to be Native people, a community of Inughuit living farther north than Europeans believed was physically possible. ....
Christmas festivities can be mysterious and when I was a child the confusion was even greater. We were a Catholic family, Irish on the one side and Italian on the other.
