Homer Stanley Benson, Jr. Thursday, May 27, 2021 Homer Stanley Benson, Jr. Dr. Homer Stanley Benson, Jr., 95, died peacefully in his Chattanooga home on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.     A resident of Chattanooga since 2006, he was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  He also served for many years as a judge on the Torch Award Committee for the Better Business Bureau and as a volunteer counselor for SCORE.   Dr. Benson was born on December 29, 1925 in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of Homer Stanley Benson Sr. and Lou Ellen Bragg. His parents soon after moved back to Columbus Georgia where Dr. Benson graduated from Columbus High School. Further schooling was interrupted by his military service in World War II as a Navy dental assistant in Corpus Christi and then Great Lakes Naval Training Center.  In 1950 he graduated from the University of Georgia as a proud Sigma Chi with a BS in Chemistry. Obituary: Normand M. Cote AUBURN - Normand M. Cote passed away April 11, 2021, at the Auburn Hospice House. He was born in Lewiston, Sept. . Read Article AUBURN – Normand M. Cote passed away April 11, 2021, at the Auburn Hospice House. He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 21, 1931, the son of William and Melanie Grenier Cote. Norm attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from St. Dominic High School, class of 1949. He was a member of Holy Cross Church – Prince of Peace Parish. After high school, Norm enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He went to boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. From there he went to Philadelphia, Pa., at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to attend Damage Control School, where he learned his skills of carpentry, boat repair, welding, sheet metal working, and as well as diving. A skill required to dive to work on the ship’s hulls and propellers. He was then assigned the USS Ajax AR6, a repair ship docked in San Diego, California. In June of 1

Major General Umberto Nobile is not a historical personage whose fame resonates down the ages. Though he did a cool thing designed the dirigible Norge and piloted it over the North Pole with explorer Roald Admundsen in 1926, making them the first people to reach that distant axis. Richard E. Byrd claimed to have beaten them by a few days, flying over the pole in an airplane. But that was later disputed. History has a way of changing its mind like that. Byrd was a hero, then; now he’s a fraud, maybe. Times change. The story of Nobile’s arrival ran in the Chicago Daily News next to an article on Zenith testing short wave radio that’s where I bumped into him. Much new technology debuted in Chicago: VHS tape was first demonstrated here, cell phones, too.
