For the vast majority of North Carolina’s 10 million–plus residents, there is only one option if they’d like to heat their home, turn on the lights, or charge their phone: Duke Energy. Twelve rock faces in the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests are closed to climbing, rappelling, hang-gliding and other activities through Aug. 15 in order to protect the rare peregrine falcons that nest there. 
Closed rock faces are: 
Pisgah District Looking Glass Rock (north face) and North Cedar Rock 
Appalachian District Whiterock Cliff and Buzzard’s Roost
Grandfather District N.C. Wall, Apricot Buttress and the Camel in Lineville Gorge; Shortoff Mountain in Linville Gorge; Bynum Bluff in Linville Gorge and Big Lost Cove Cliffs ....

The Linville Gorge Wilderness Area is pictured after a light snow in December. The U.S. Forest Service purchased 205 acres from The Conservation Fund for permanent protection adjacent to the gorge.
A one-time Christmas tree farm abutting the iconic Linville Gorge in Burke County is now a sprawling, natural playground for white-tailed deer, warblers and wild turkey, as well as for humans.
On the last day of 2020, the Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit land trust, sold the 205-acre Long Arm Mountain property to the U.S. Forest Service. ....
