Pacheedaht tells CRD to stay out of its business

Isitt tried to amend the motion, which he filed a month earlier, by removing all references to the Pacheedaht and Fairy Creek, and using more generic terms about supporting a transition away old-growth logging.
Isitt said Thursday he changed the wording after the CRD received a terse letter from the Pacheedaht saying it did not welcome the “unsolicited interference or involvement” from the region’s governing body. He will introduce the new motion at the next meeting.
CRD board chair Colin Plant wouldn’t allow the amended motion, citing procedure, and said Isitt’s original motion would start the next board meeting on May 26. ....

Pilot fatigue, poor weather played role in float-plane crash that killed four, says safety board

The pilot’s attention, vigilance and general cognitive function were likely affected by fatigue, said the TSB report, noting he had worked 27 of the 28 days before the crash, and sometimes worked during the night with minimal rest periods.
The Cessna 208 Caravan float plane, which had departed from Vancouver airport’s water aerodrome, struck the heavily forested hills of Addenbroke Island, about 100 kilometres north of Port Hardy, killing the pilot and three passengers and injuring five others. The aircraft was destroyed.
The TSB report identified several factors that led to the crash, including the pilot’s fatigue, the decision to take off despite poor conditions and the role group dynamics played in that decision. ....

Saanich council ditches ALR application to move forward with Panama Flats plan

Three years later, council endorsed a plan for the flats, with the first step to move 14.5 hectares to the Agricultural Land Reserve. The land is adjacent to an 8.5-hectare portion of the flats that is already part of the ALR.
The application was rejected, while a second application made in 2019 was referred back to council for review.
At Monday’s meeting, however, councillors unanimously voted to abandon the ALR application.
Coun. Judy Brownofff, who was on council at the time the plan was created, said the move means the district can begin work on other plans for the park.
Staff has been asked to report back on how they can move forward with other components of the concept plan, including changes to the Colquitz River to improve floodplain function, restoration of a Garry oak ecosystem, creating a buffer between bird habitat and trails, upgrades to existing trails and the creation of new walking paths. ....

Project seen as renewal for Gorge Tillicum neighbourhood

It’s the site of a strip mall anchored by Il Greco Restaurant, which owns the property at the northwest corner of the busy intersection. “This is a wonderful first step to renewal … replacing tired, older infrastructure … and growing our community,” said Coun. Colin Plant.
Councillors granted the landowner rezoning from commercial to general commercial neighbourhood centre and allowed variance permits on building setbacks, height and reduced parking.
They noted architect Alan Lowe, the applicant acting on behalf of the property owner, worked closely with municipal staff to fine tune the project.
The landowner also agreed to make a $108,000 contribution for improvements to nearby Gorge Park and will finance the removal of trees on the property that will be replanted at other locations in the municipality. ....
