Tourism generated £1 billion last year, but looks to have fallen by more than two thirds in 2020
The Titanic Belfast attraction has changed the tourism footprint of Northern Ireland since its opening eight years ago. It has welcomed over six million visitors from 145 different countries, generating a spend of £319 million.
Yet, after more than nine months of Covid-induced disruption, this jewel in the visitor economy will be forced to close once more as Northern Ireland prepares for a six-week lockdown, beginning on December 26. Non-essential shops will cease trading on Christmas Eve, while pubs, cafes and restaurants will be restricted to a takeaway service. Hotels must close too, apart from for guests who are already booked in. ....

Planning approval for Lagan footbridge hailed as 'significant development'


Approval given to the first phase of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Lagan has been welcomed as a “significant development”.
While a bridge in the area has been subject to plans over decades, planning permission for the latest project was granted back in 2016, however work has not yet commenced.
The bridge between the Gasworks and Ormeau Park was part of the Belfast Region City Deal funded and agreed by the UK Government last year.
The new approval by the Belfast City Council Planning Committee extends the planning permission past April 2021 when it was initially due to expire and allows a pedestrian crossing at Ormeau Embankment to be put in place – the first phase of the bridge. ....
