The project aims to slow the flow of water to Lorton and the River Cocker Picture: West Cumbria Rivers Trust Work on a natural flood management project at Whinlatter Forest has officially begun. In partnership with Forestry England and the Environment Agency, West Cumbria Rivers Trust is installing over 200 leaky dams in Aiken Beck, Whinlatter Gill and various tributaries and forest ditches. The project aims to slow the flow of water towards Lorton and the River Cocker, utilising logs and tree trunks from Whinlatter to create the dams, which will hold back water when beck levels are high during storms. ....

The artistic talents of a Cumbrian community were put to the test recently as part of a competition. McCarthy and Stone, which has a residential living property in Cockermouth, held a competition to capture the best views of the town. Ian Downes, 68, was named winner of the competition with his photo ‘Where the River Cocker meets the River Derwent’. He said: “This is the first time I have ever entered a photographic competition. I am thrilled to have won. “My wife Janet is very patient of my hobby, but has frequently lamented that I take more pictures of scenes and views than I do of people, so I think I’ll definitely look to treat her with some of the winnings.” ....

FLOOD alerts, including one for Carlisle, remain in force for north and west Cumbria. The Flood Information Service has seven flood alerts in the area and one flood warning - in the region there are a total of 13 alerts after persistent rains. Alerts indicate that flooding is possible - be prepared - warnings indicate that flooding is expected - immediate action required . The flood alerts in place include: Lower River Eden A spokesman said: Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Crosby-on-Eden, Linstock, Carlisle and Rockcliffe areas. High river levels are possible on the River Eden, River Caldew, River Petteril, Durranhill Beck, Brunstock Beck, Gosling Sike, Little Caldew, Parham Beck, Rockcliffe Beck and their tributaries.
