Attorney: OKC Police Had 'No Reason' To Chase Suspect Before Fatal Crash That Killed Pregnant Mother

Family and friends of Star Shells, 28, held a candlelight vigil Wednesday in northeast Oklahoma City at Northeast 16th St. and Martin Luther King Ave., where the pregnant mother of two was fatally struck by a stolen truck.
Police said Shells was fatally struck by Wacey Mikles, who allegedly stole the truck earlier that morning. Mikles is booked at the Oklahoma County Detention Center on complaints of murder, attempting to elude police and other charges.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Shells was driving east on NE 16th St. and had a green light at the time of the crash. Shells had just dropped off her two kids at school prior to the crash. ....

Deadly police chase that killed OKC mother reached 95 mph

A police pursuit that left an Oklahoma City mother dead reached speeds of 95 mph through an eastside corridor, according to court documents.
A man stole a Ford F-350 pickup about 7:20 a.m. on May 24 from a work site on the south side of the city and led police on a wild pursuit that ended violently when the truck collided with the vehicle of Star Shells, 28, at the intersection of Martin Luther King Avenue and NE 16, killing Shells instantly.
Shells was about five months pregnant and left behind two young sons.
Police arrested Wacey Gerron Mikles, 38, who has previous felony convictions for bank robberies, grand larceny and robbery with a dangerous weapon. ....

She kept the burial flag of her grandfather, a U.S. Army veteran, in her car window, and it was that flag, in pieces and scattered on the northeast Oklahoma City street, that signified Star Shells was dead.
Shells’ mother, Connie Basco, got the call Monday morning, shortly after Shells, 28, dropped her two young sons off at John W. Rex Charter School and was on her way home.
There had been a police chase, ending in a violent car wreck at Martin Luther King Avenue and NE 16. It scattered car parts along an entire city block. Basco arrived on the scene, desperate for answers. ....
