The idea of prehistoric flying reptiles conjures images of pointed-headed pterodactyls with sharp teeth and leathery skin, but a newly described pterosaur appears more cuddly than you d expect. Paleontologists in China have uncovered a fossilized skeleton of Sinomacrops bondei, a new species and genus that would have been covered in hair-like filaments and glided through primordial forests. Classified as an anurognathid, it would have had round eyes and a short, stubby chin, drawing comparisons to the adorable Porgs from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. It s the first anurognathid found with its full skull exposed in lateral view, allowing scientists to better understand the species evolutionary development and diversification. ....
Boulder, Colo., USA: Several articles were published online ahead of print for GSA Bulletin in February. Topics include earthquake cycles in southern Cascadia, fault dynamics in the Gulf of Mexico, debris flow after wildfires, the assembly of Rodinia, and the case for no ring fracture in Mono basin. Jurassic evolution of the Qaidam Basin in western China: Constrained by stratigraphic succession, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology and Hf isotope analysis Tao Qian; Zongxiu Wang; Yu Wang; Shaofeng Liu; Wanli Gao . Abstract: The formation and evolution of an intracontinental basin triggered via the subduction or collision of plates at continental margins can record ....
Pterosaurs were highly successful reptiles that lived between 210 and 65 million years ago. They were the first vertebrates to evolve powered flight, but their origin has remained an unresolved enigma in paleontology since the 19th century. With the help of pterosaur skulls and skeletons that were unearthed in North America, Brazil, Argentina, and Madagascar in recent years, a team of paleontologists has now demonstrated that flightless dinosaur precursors called lagerpetids (family Lagerpetidae) are the sister group of pterosaurs. Pterosaurs are deeply rooted in popular culture, are frequently portrayed in books and films, and include the largest flying animals ever known. Their evolutionary history spans more than 150 million years, ending at the close of the Mesozoic era. ....
