New Bedford Acushnet Avenue fire victims remembered in vigil

NEW BEDFORD Members of the Guatemalan community came together Tuesday evening to remember the two men who perished in a fire on Acushnet Avenue that also destroyed two buildings, two businesses and displaced dozens of residents.
Tomas Gomes, 48, and Juan Macario Mejia, 40, were remembered in a vigil set up outside in a parking lot near the site of the fire at 1279 and 1283 Acushnet Ave.
Gomes has family in Guatemala and Mejia has family in New Bedford and Guatemala, said Andrian Ventura who organized the vigil. Ventura is the executive director of Centro Comunitario de Trabajadores (Community Worker’s Center), a not-for-profit organization that works with the immigrant community in New Bedford. The CCT office is located just down the block from where the fire happened. ....

Two people were killed in a New Bedford fire early Monday morning, according to fire officials.
The early morning structure fire in two mixed-use residential and commercial buildings on Acushnet Avenue resulted in two deaths, confirmed Acting Fire Chief Scott Kruger.
“The thoughts of the New Bedford Fire Department are with the victims and their families,” the acting fire chief said in a statement.
Next of kin have not yet been notified, so further details will be provided later.
About 40 people were displaced by the fire. ....

New Bedford Fires Not Related, Chief Kruger Says
New Bedford crews battled five major fires in seven days, and one of the fires is being investigated as arson. However, there is no evidence that the fires are related, according to Acting Fire Chief Scott Kruger.
There have been several major fires lately in our city besides this one but there is no connection between them, Kruger was quoted in a Jan. 29 statement sent from the Office of State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey announcing a determination that the Jan. 27 fire at 124 Bonney had been intentionally set.

New Bedford House Fire at Bonney Street Deemed Arson
An early-morning New Bedford fire in a vacant three-story wood-frame house was intentionally set, according to Acting Fire Chief Scott Kruger.
An investigation into the Jan. 27 blaze at 124 Bonney St. is now being conducted by the city s Fire Investigation Unit, the New Bedford Police Department, and the State Fire Marshals Office, Kruger said.
Shortly after midnight Wednesday, multiple 911 callers reported a structure fire in the area of Jason Court and Bonney Street. Upon arrival, Engine 6 reported flames extending from the rear of a vacant three-story wood-frame dwelling.
The location made access difficult as the burning building was located behind two adjacent residences and at the end of a small dead-end street, the fire department said on social media. Photos from the scene show firefighters working in the slush and snow. ....
