NATO, EU Powers Talk Tough Over Belarus But Can't Protect Exiled Dissidents

NATO, EU Powers Talk Tough Over Belarus But Can t Protect Exiled Dissidents
On 5/28/21 at 6:46 AM EDT
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko shocked the world when a fake bomb threat forced a passenger plane to divert to Minsk where security forces arrested prominent dissident journalist Roman Protasevich and his partner.
The operation was shocking in its brazenness, prompting condemnation from the international community and threats of additional sanctions against Lukashenko and his authoritarian regime, clinging to power in spite of mass protests that erupted after last year s disputed presidential election.
Lukashenko has retained power through brutality and fear. Security forces, keen to suppress the simmering revolution, arrested and tortured thousands. Backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Lukashenko has resisted calls for fresh elections and dialogue and is now intensifying an assault on the country s surviving free media. ....

Belarus 'hijacking' is test for international community | Belarus

Last modified on Mon 24 May 2021 12.28 EDT
Belarus’s president, Alexander Lukashenko, has unleashed a brutal campaign against his opponents. More than 35,000 people have been arrested, thousands have been tortured or abused, and 400 political prisoners are currently behind bars. Earlier this week a 50-year-old opposition activist, Vitold Ashurok, died in a penal colony. The official cause of death was “heart attack”. His widow believes he was murdered.
It is against this dark and repressive backdrop that the extraordinary events of Sunday took place. According to state media, Lukashenko personally authorised the forced downing of a Ryanair plane as it flew over Belarusian airspace between Greece and Lithuania – a real-time hijacking. He even dispatched a MIG-29 fighter jet to ensure the pilot complied after being informed of a fake bomb threat. ....

Preventing "Cultural Catastrophe" in the pandemic: A Cultural Rights Approach

Preventing “Cultural Catastrophe” in the pandemic: A Cultural Rights Approach
CULTURAL ONLINE EVENT
Recently, I attended an online event that tackled the topic of cultural rights across the world affected by a pandemic that has brought on a “cultural catastrophe”. According to the UN special rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, “Cultural rights are fundamental for the respect of human dignity, in the diversity of its expressions” which is the stated purpose of the UN mandate. The current UN-appointed mandate holder, Karima Bennoune, Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights since 2015, shared her hard work and addressed the need for greater recognition of and support for cultural rights defenders. Her forthcoming report for the council in 2021 focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cultural rights. ....

Running time: 90 MIN.
The stymied popular uprising in Belarus that began in August 2020 is yet to completely play out, but it’s important to have Aliaksei Paluyan’s polished on-the-ground documentary now as a record of what happened last summer. “Courage” follows three members of the underground Belarus Free Theater as they participate in the resistance to Alexander Lukashenko’s 26 years of dictatorship, at first through dissident performances and then on the streets when protesters amassed, demanding the end of the regime. Given ongoing developments, it’s no surprise the film concludes abruptly, and knowing that the ....

Brussels, 12. Jan, 07:06
Ukrainian police have visited an undisclosed EU state to collect fresh evidence on a potential Belarusian link to the murder of one of eastern Europe s best-known journalists, Pavel Sheremet, four years ago.
The Ukrainian delegation was to interview Igor Makar, a 37-year old Belarusian ex-special forces officer, who recently came forward with a bugged recording of Belarus former spy-chief discussing Sheremet s assassination, which was published by this website.
