FirstHealth of the Carolinas broke ground Thursday morning on its new $68 million comprehensive cancer center. The all-encompassing facility represents a major step forward for cancer treatment and patient care, from diagnosis to treatment, and most importantly, survivorship. Construction of the four-story building is expected to continue through late 2022. The new structure and its adjoining parking deck on Page Road are located directly across the street from Moore Regionalâs main hospital campus in Pinehurst. FirstHealth Cancer Center, rendering courtesy of CPL Architecture Art Medeiros, chairman of Foundation of FirstHealth Board, said building the multidisciplinary cancer center was both a practical and pragmatic decision. Hawkins is ending her post this week as Pinehurstâs assistant village manager and walking a few blocks south to her new office, where she is replacing longtime director Pat Corso. Hawkins is an outstanding choice for a number of reasons, not the least of which is her longtime experience in Moore County and dealing with a multitude of issues and constituencies. Pinehurst can be a tough place to serve, seeing as there is no lack of retirees willing to tell you how to do your job. ....

BLACKSTONE – A turbulent senior year has ended in success for Blackstone-Millville Regional High School’s top students, who will lead their class during graduation ceremonies in June. Natalie Hawkins and Gabriele Martinelli have been named the valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2021. Both students are members of the National Honor Society who invested their time during high school in AP classes, extracurricular activities and band. Hawkins, the daughter of Lauren Hawkins of Milford, Mass., and Daniel Hawkins of Blackstone, is an aspiring artist who plans to attend the Rhode Island School of Design in the fall. She told The Breeze she enjoys drawing portraits and storyboard characters and hopes to pursue illustration. Last spring, she created a picture honoring health care workers that was sent to employees at Mass General Hospital. ....
