To the editor: The Saranac Lake community lost two amazing people late last year: Natalie Leduc and Tom Boothe. Dewey Mountain Friends invites you to join us for a candlelight ski service in their memory Friday evening, March 5 at Dewey Mountain Recreation Center. Natalie and Tom exemplified volunteerism; their dedication to lifting up this community and our neighbors across the Adirondacks was tireless. Both loved skiing and the outdoors, and they did everything in their power to make sure everyone, regardless of background, had a chance to share in that joy. They donated their time and resources to Dewey Mountain and Mount Pisgah to ensure both places were accessible and sustainable most importantly, they inspired many others to do the same. ....
The North Elba Town Hall (Enterprise photo â Griffin Kelly) LAKE PLACID Members of the North Elba Town Council unanimously approved the hiring of Haley Breen as the town’s first-ever community development director on Tuesday evening. The next day, she was on the job. Breen was recommended by the Lake Placid/North Elba Community Development Commission’s ad hoc Development Director Group, consisting of Community Development Commission Chairman Dean Dietrich, town Councilor Emily Politi, Lake Placid village Mayor Craig Randall, village Trustee Art Devlin, Peter Roland and Kate Thompson. “She is a soon to be graduate of Cornell Institute for Public Affairs (CIPA) with a Master of Public Affairs and a concentration in environmental policy,” Politi wrote in an email Tuesday after the vote. “She starts tomorrow and one of her first tasks will be to write a press release announcing herself.” ....

People are fed and clothed, the ill and injured are cared for, fires are extinguished, artists’ work is promoted, libraries are maintained, events are planned and the natural environment is curated by volunteers. In March, as usual, the Lake Placid News and Adirondack Daily Enterprise will honor a particularly service-oriented local resident as the Tri-Lakes Volunteer of the Year, and as usual, we need your help. We need our readers to nominate people who deserve the honor. Each of the Tri-Lakes villages has its own volunteer awards the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival king and queen, for example, although the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an extra year before new ones are chosen but this is the only one for the entire region. ....
