In his annual report to city council today, Kamloops RCMP Supt. Syd Lecky said it is time to consider a ‘safe supply’ for those experiencing drug addiction.
Lecky presented the 2020 report to council today, March 9, saying he’d like to see collaboration between different government agencies and a sweeping change to drug policies.
“Right now it seems that different ministries and authorities are working in silos. We need something, maybe a new ministry, that will bring those efforts together,” Lecky said. “We’ve got more people dying than ever right now. It seems to me that the time has come to start talking about safe supplies.” ....

Patients may be more likely to receive prescriptions for opioids when they come in for checkups and appointments later in the day even when they don’t really have a need for the drugs.
According to the researchers, this could be linked to the daily pressures and time constraints that doctors face, which could interfere with their decision-making process.
As described in
JAMA Network Open, the research team took data from 678,319 primary care appointments, all of which were related to health issues related to pain, such as headaches, back pains, joint diseases, musculoskeletal conditions including fibromyalgia and other pain syndromes. None of the patients had received an opioid prescription in the past 12 months. ....
