Enzo Chaim Sereni (1905-1944) was an Italian Zionist, co-founder of Kibbutz Givat Brenner, a celebrated intellectual, and a Jewish Brigade officer best known for his heroism in parachuting into Nazi-occupied Italy in World War II, where he was captured and executed in Dachau.
Sereni’s wealthy assimilated Italian family was both culturally eminent and Jewishly involved; for example, his father was physician to the Italian king Victor Emanuel III and his uncle was head of the organization of Jewish communities in Italy. While still a teen, Sereni became one of Italy’s first Zionists after attending and being inspired by the Thirteenth Zionist Congress in Carlsbad (1923). ....

The grave of Jewish man David Stoliar, who died on May 1, 2014, at his home in Bend, was a mystery
On a recent historical tour to Mill Creek Cemetery, a recent grave was noted. It had a star of David on the stone designating a Jewish background. It led to a curiosity about why the grave was at the cemetery.
David Stoliar was born in Kishinev, Romania, on Oct. 31, 1922. His father was a Jewish textile manufacturer in Bucharest. His parents divorced, and Stoliar lived with his mother in Paris for several years. He returned to Bucharest in 1936 and finished high school. As Germany rose to prominence prior to World War II, Stoliar was taken to forced labor camps and dug trenches. His father became very concerned as brutality against Jews spread. ....

Walter Edward Guinness, 1st Baron Moyne (1880-1944) was a member of the well-known Anglo-Irish Guinness brewing family who began his political career in 1907, gaining prominence during the 1920s while holding a series of cabinet positions. A close ally of Winston Churchill, he served as the British minister of state in the Middle East until November 1944, when he was assassinated by the Lehi (acronym for “Fighters for the Freedom of Israel”), also known as “the Stern Gang.”

It was a mission she knew she might not survive.
Still, in March 1944, a young Jewish immigrant to Palestine named Hannah Senesh (Anna Szenes) parachuted into occupied Slovenia on behalf of the British Army.
The goals were twofold to help Allied pilots who had fallen behind enemy lines flee to safety and to work with partisan forces to rescue Jewish communities under Nazi occupation.
Senesh was captured by the Hungarian police on June 7, tortured for months, and executed on November 7. She was only 23. ....
